Elmwood

A historic streetcar suburb on Providence's South Side, anchored by Victorian housing and the gateway to Roger Williams Park

Elmwood is a triangular South Side neighborhood demarcated by Broad Street, Elmwood Avenue, and I-95, with two sections listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It borders the 427-acre Roger Williams Park and sits on RIPTA's Route 20 corridor running from downtown Providence to T.F. Green Airport.

About Elmwood

Elmwood sits on Providence's South Side, a triangular neighborhood bounded by Broad Street, Elmwood Avenue, and Interstate 95. The neighborhood traces its name to developer Joseph J. Cooke, who in 1843 purchased a large tract of farmland and named the estate "Elmwood," intending — with other developers — to build a model suburban community of wide streets shaded by elm trees. Development accelerated through the mid-19th century as Providence's population doubled and improved omnibus, horse-car, and electrified streetcar service made the area accessible from downtown.

The neighborhood's architectural legacy is formally recognized on multiple levels. In 1980, two predominantly residential areas were added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Elmwood Historic District (NRHP reference number 80004603), with emphasis on their 19th-century revival and Victorian houses. The City of Providence has additionally established North Elmwood and South Elmwood as local historic districts, which protect historic properties by restricting exterior modifications to features such as windows, porches, and slate roofs. Restoration efforts in the neighborhood were featured on Season 11 of Bob Vila's _Home Again_ across 13 episodes.

Today Elmwood borders Roger Williams Park, the elaborately landscaped 427-acre city park that was bequeathed to Providence in 1872 by Betsey Williams, the last descendant of Roger Williams to inherit his land. Elmwood Avenue itself remains a primary north–south corridor served by RIPTA Route 20 between downtown Providence and T.F. Green Airport, and the Knight Memorial branch of the Community Libraries of Providence serves neighborhood residents. The Census Bureau classifies the neighborhood as part of Census Tract 2, with a 2023 ACS-reported population of 6,408 and a median age of 47.
