Federal Hill
Providence's Little Italy, dense and walkable, just across I-95 from downtown
Federal Hill sits immediately west of downtown Providence, marked at its entrance by the La Pigna sculpture hanging from the gateway arch over Atwells Avenue. The neighborhood combines a tight grid of 19th-century streets, the DePasquale Plaza dining square, and a residential mix of tenements and row houses.
About Federal Hill
Federal Hill sits immediately west of downtown Providence, across Interstate 95 — bounded by Westminster Street to the south and Routes 6 and 10 to the west and north. The neighborhood was named after a Fourth of July 1788 ox-roast intended to celebrate ratification of the federal Constitution; that celebration was nearly broken up by an armed Anti-Federalist march led by General William West, and the eventual compromise allowed only a celebration of Independence Day.
The Hill's population was first largely Irish — by the 1860s McKenna was the most common surname in the neighborhood, reflecting heavy migration from the Barony of Truagh during the 1845–1851 famine — before southern Italian immigration reshaped it from the 1870s onward. The Italian inheritance is still embedded in the streetscape: the gateway arch over Atwells Avenue carries the La Pigna pine-cone sculpture as a symbol of welcome, and the median of Atwells is painted in the Italian tricolor. DePasquale Plaza, the open-air square at the heart of the restaurant district, was fully rebuilt around its central fountain in July 2020 after a 2019 vehicle strike.
The neighborhood pairs that dining corridor — over twenty restaurants within a quarter-mile of Atwells — with a residential fabric of narrow, often one-way cross streets, a few still cobblestoned. The Broadway–Armory Historic District to the south contains landmarks like the 1926 Italianate Columbus Theatre at 270 Broadway. Civic anchors include the Providence Public Safety Complex at 325 Washington Street, the home of the city's police, fire, and municipal court operations since 2002.
