Hartford
A working west-side neighborhood between Silver Lake and Olneyville, anchored by Merino Park and the Woonasquatucket Greenway
Hartford is one of Providence's smaller neighborhoods, built around 19th-century mill housing and a stretch of the Woonasquatucket River. Today it offers modest single- and two-family homes, easy Route 6 access, and a riverfront park connecting it to the broader greenway system.
About Hartford
Hartford is a compact, working-class neighborhood on the western edge of Providence, separated from Olneyville and Manton by U.S. Route 6 and the Woonasquatucket River and bordered to the south by Silver Lake. The neighborhood takes its identity from Hartford Avenue and from a layered immigration history that brought Irish, then Polish, and then Italian families during the 19th and early 20th centuries; today the area is majority Hispanic or Latino.
Industrial history shaped the street grid. The 1812 Mill Merino, the second textile mill in the area, produced a soft fabric called "merino cloth" and built Merino Village — stone houses, a general store, and a water supply — to support its workers. In the 1950s, the construction of Route 6 demolished a swath of working-class housing, and two large public-housing developments — Hartford Park and Manton Heights — reshaped the neighborhood's footprint and demographics.
Today the neighborhood's open-space anchor is Merino Park, an 18.6-acre site on the Woonasquatucket River that was a sheep farm, skating pond, landfill, and salt-storage yard before being remediated from brownfield status in the early 2000s; it now offers a tot lot, picnic areas, lighted basketball courts, and a bike path connecting to the Woonasquatucket River Greenway and (via a pedestrian bridge) to Manton. Census Tract 18 — the tract used for Hartford — recorded 6,503 residents with a median age of 34, median household income of $57,808, and 51.1% owner-occupied housing in the most recent ACS 5-year data.
