Wanskuck
A 19th-century mill village in Providence's North End
Built around the Wanskuck Company woolen mill founded in 1862, Wanskuck retains its mill-era street grid, worker housing, and a National Register-listed historic district along the West River. The neighborhood sits in Providence's North End between Providence College to the west and Route 146 to the east.
About Wanskuck
Wanskuck takes its name from a Narragansett word for low-lying land, recorded in early documents as "Wanscott, Wenscott, or Wenscutt." The area was annexed to North Providence in 1765 as mostly farmland, then transformed in 1862 when Stephen T. Olney, Jesse Metcalf, and Henry J. Steere established the Wanskuck Company woolen mill on the West River.
The mill anchored a full village. The Wanskuck Company built community infrastructure including a community hall in 1884, and the surrounding blocks along Branch Street, Veazie Street, and Woodward Road filled with duplexes, rowhouses, and church complexes built for an immigrant workforce of English, Scottish, Irish, French Canadian, Italian, and German families. That mill village core — two late-19th-century mill complexes plus 119 acres of associated housing and civic buildings — was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 1, 1983.
Today the neighborhood sits in Providence's North End between Providence College to the west and Route 146 to the east, with RIPTA Route 50 running down Douglas Avenue and Route 58 along Mineral Spring Avenue. Walk Score rates the area 81/100 — "Very Walkable."
