Reservoir
A southwest Providence neighborhood built around Mashapaug Pond and the Reservoir Triangle
Reservoir is a residential pocket on the Cranston border anchored by Mashapaug Pond — the largest freshwater pond in Providence — and the commercial corridor along Reservoir Avenue. The neighborhood sits within Providence Ward 8 and is a short distance from Roger Williams Park.
About Reservoir
Reservoir is a compact southwest Providence neighborhood defined as much by its hard edges as by its center. The Amtrak Northeast Corridor forms the boundary to the north and east, and the Cranston city line closes off the west and south, giving the neighborhood a clear footprint within Providence Ward 8. The commercial spine is Reservoir Avenue itself, which carries RIPTA Route 21 toward Garden City and CCRI in Cranston.
The neighborhood's defining natural feature is Mashapaug Pond, a 114-acre body of water that is the largest freshwater pond in Providence and sits entirely within Reservoir's boundaries. The pond's shoreline along Adelaide Avenue is the former site of the Gorham Manufacturing Company, the prominent silver maker that operated there from 1890 until 1967. The art deco Cal-Art Tower remains a recognizable landmark on Reservoir Avenue.
Just east, Roger Williams Park spans 427 acres in the southernmost part of Providence at the Cranston border and houses the Roger Williams Park Zoo — the third-oldest zoo in the United States — along with a natural history museum and planetarium, botanical center, Japanese gardens, and seven lakes covering roughly 98 acres. For families with school-age children, Reservoir Avenue Elementary School at 156 Reservoir Avenue serves grades K–5 with about 290 students.
